Dirt Bike Tuition

Always wanted to learn to ride a dirt bike but never knew where to start?

Does your child want to take up dirt-biking?

Looking for something different to do for that birthday/anniversary/special occasion/stag or hen 'do'/staff social outing/corporate team building?

Fancy trying out a bike before you commit to buying one for yourself or your children/partner?

If you can ride a two-wheel pedal bike confidently; stopping/starting/steering and braking, you can ride a dirt bike.  From approximately 5 years upwards; our most senior hirer is 80 years old!

Want your teenager to learn how to handle a motorbike without the added distractions of road signs, road code and heavy traffic?

Need to improve your skills or techniques - cornering, hill-climbing, descents, picking lines, riding a berm?  We can help you take your riding to the next level.

Whether you're a novice, intermediate or have never sat on a dirt bike before, we have experienced, accredited coaches who are also champion dirt bike riders.

James is New Zealand's most experienced coach.  We are proud to carry the Adventure Mark safety audit accreditation for NZ adventure activities regulated and certified by Work Safe.

James and his son Nik are available for individual or group dirt bike lessons.  Coach to student ration = 1:4 maximum.

No motorcycle licence or experience necessary

All tuition is taken at your own pace, without pressure.

Please book your tuition in advance.  We do not take bookings on the day and would hate you to have a wasted journey. To book your tuition, please go to the "Bookings" tab at the top of this page.

We also hire dirt bikes with all the protective gear  so you have everything you need to learn safely & have a ton of fun. (All bikes and protective gear are commercially washed after each hire).   Again, bookings in advance are essential.

BEGINNER COACHING:

For total novices, in the interests of (a) safety (b) technique and (c) personal enjoyment and comfort, we do recommend two hours of coaching:

  • 1st hour:  This will cover basic bike handling including starting, stopping, braking and changing gear.  You will have plenty of time to practice on the Learners’ Track afterwards.
  • 2nd hour:  After lunch we will progress to cornering and standing up.   Following this lesson, the remainder of the day is yours to practice your new skills and enjoy the tracks.

NEXT STEPS COACHING:

James and Nik can help you take your riding to the next level in a personalised one-on-one session specifically suited to your skills and experience, focussing on what you need at this stage of your riding.

TUITION ON YOUR OWN BIKE:

James & Nik can coach you on your own bike, in a personalised one-on-one session specifically suited to your skills and experience, focussing on what you need at this stage of your riding.

You will be required to complete a Self-Scrutiny form, stating that your bike is an appropriate size and engine capacity for the rider and that it is in good order.  This will be attached to your booking confirmation; please print it off for completion and bring it with you on the day.

You are also required to provide your own protective gear; although we do have it available for hire at $10 per item if you require anything.

Tuition fees of $90 per hour (inclusive of gst, plus booking fee and, if applicable, credit card fee), when riding your own bike, are in addition to the usual entry fee for the Park on the day. This fee must be paid separately, on arrival.

Please book your tuition in advance.  We do not take bookings on the day and would hate you to have a wasted journey. To book your tuition, please go to the "Bookings" tab at the top of this page.

Meet the Team

James:

James took up competitive riding in his 40s, as a ‘track Dad’ and now has a jam-packed trophy cabinet to show for his success.    He continues to compete on a regular basis.  James’ is New Zealand's most experienced dirt bike coach; you will be in good hands.  His empathy, gentle manner and practical approach make him an excellent instructor for riders of all ages and skill levels.

Danie:

James’ daughter Danie has been riding since she was a toddler.  On the competition circuit as a teenager, she was one of the few girls on the tracks but she held her own and collected a swag of trophies along the way.  Danie now has a young family and helps out with tuition, mainly female groups, when she can.

Nik:

James’ son, Nik, wanted to ride before he could walk.  He loves all things with wheels and engines; particularly if they can go fast and/or get air!  For many years he was a coach at Camp Woodward in the USA, teaching extreme sports to teenagers.  Nik is an experienced and successful rider who can gently help a learner conquer their fears or take a more experienced rider through their paces cross-country.

Mandy:

Mandy, James’ partner, has only been riding since they met in 2015.  At the age of 52, she had never been near a motorbike before and enthusiastically took up dirt biking under the Fowlie family’s careful tuition.  She has made many great friends through the sport and is happy to help out with learner riders, for whom she feels great empathy.  She also takes care of rider meet/greet and will help you out with any problem.
